Fibe TV1 preps influencer spotlight series TO Tubers

The Toronto-based influencers featured in the series have a combined YouTube following of 8.5 million subscribers.

Bell’s Fibe TV1 will next month launch TO Tubers, a six-part docuseries spotlighting six of Toronto’s most prominent (and followed) YouTube influencers.

Bolstered by the opening of YouTube’s Toronto studio in April of this year, the city’s influencer space has never been more vibrant, TO Tubers producer and host Eileen McCurdy told Playback Daily, with internet personalities, and specifically YouTubers, drawing increasing levels of attention.

Commissioned by Bell last year, the series is produced by Marc Whiteway and McCurdy of Toronto’s Bellows Media, and features YouTube influencers Matthew Santoro, Cory Vidal, TheSorryGirls, Lauren Toyota, Sylvia Jade and Mugglesam, who have a combined YouTube following of approximately 8.5 million subscribers.

The project came about when, having seen Hope Heights, a doc produced by Whiteway and McCurdy, last year, Fibe TV1 producer Ian Daffern approached the pair about the possibility of them making a series for Fibe. Whiteway and McCurdy pitched the idea of a behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of a Toronto-based influencer and the series went into production not long after.

“We are always looking to develop the talent of our community producers, until they can hopefully become self-sustaining or find work from larger broadcasters or conventional broadcasters,” Daffern told Playback Daily.

As well as highlighting the everyday lives of some of the city’s YouTube influencers, the series also demonstrates the newfound ability of internet stars to build sustainable careers operating out of Toronto. “There used to be a lot of pressure on influencers to move to L.A. or New York,” said MCurdy, “so to have a YT space of our own in Toronto is important.”

Starting Sept. 26, Fibe TV1 will begin promoting one episode of TO Tubers per week in the “recommended” folder of its VOD store. Fibe will also showcase the series in its Entertainment Folder for a month, beginning on Oct. 3. The promotion of the series will also be timed to coincide with next month’s Buffer Fest (Oct. 20 to 23), co-founded by Corey Vidal, which brings together some of the most acclaimed influencers in the world and showcases YouTube video premieres.

And, of course, the series will also receive significant exposure through each of the influencer’s social media channels, with each influencer promoting the series’ trailer to their respective followers.

In the future, Daffern said it’s possible the series could be expanded to other cities or feature a new batch of influencers from Toronto.
