Global scores with Super Bowl

Global scored big with this year’s NFL final when 3.1 million Canadians tuned in to Super Bowl XXXIX on Feb. 6, drawing a 13.1 rating with 18-49s in Toronto and 13.8 in Vancouver. And yet, the numbers were down from last year’s big game, which brought in 3.6 million and hit shares of 16.3 with the same demo in Toronto and 13.9 in Vancouver.

Also on Global, the two-hour pilot Falcon Beach aired on Jan. 29 to 393,000 viewers. Coproduced by Winnipeg’s Original Pictures and Toronto’s Insight Entertainment, the teen drama is in the running to be picked up as a series (see story, p. 2) and was shot on location last year around Lake Winnipeg.

The CTV MOW Crazy Canucks, by comparison, drew a solid 1.1 million viewers on Feb. 2. Produced by Calgary-based Alberta Filmworks, it is based on the true story of the Men’s Canadian Alpine Ski Team, which made a name for itself and its country on the World Cup downhill circuit between 1974 and 1976.

CTV fared well with the first of three Degrassi: The Next Generation episodes featuring U.S. director Kevin Smith in a guest role. CTV aired an 8 p.m. episode on Jan. 31, drawing a season-average 631,000 audience, following with the first Smith ep, which was watched by 749,000 in the show’s regular 8:30 p.m. timeslot.

According to CTV, the Feb. 7 ep, also featuring Smith, brought in 821,000, scoring 70% higher than usual with 18-34s.
