CraveTV, CTV greenlight Russell Peters limited series

Bell Media’s CraveTV has tapped famed comedian Russell Peters to star in its second original series, Russell Peters is the Indian Detective.

The limited series (4 x 60 minutes), described as a “fish-out-of-water dramedy,” was commissioned in partnership with CTV. It was developed for Peters by executive producer and writer Frank Spotnitz, and co-writer Smita Bhide. CraveTV’s first original series, Letterkenny, recently went into production on its second season in Sudbury, ON.

Indian Detective is produced by Spotnitz’s London, U.K.-based Big Light Productions, Toronto-based Blue Ice Pictures and L.A.-based Wonder Films. It follows Peters’ Doug D’Mello, a Toronto cop of Indian descent who gets caught up in a local case while visiting his father in Mumbai.

Set up as a Canada-South Africa-E.U. coproduction, the series is set to begin production this fall and will shoot in South Africa, India and Toronto. Indian Detective is Peters’ first starring role in a scripted television series. It’s slated for a 2017 premiere on CraveTV; ostensibly, a CTV airdate will follow.

The series announcement comes just one day after it was announced that Ransomanother show executive produced by Spotnitz, was greenlit by Global and France’s TF1.

Russell Peters is the Indian Detective is executive produced by Blue Ice Pictures’ Daniel Iron and Lance Samuels, Wonder Films’ Mark Burton, CPI Pictures Clayton Peters, and Paul Canterma. The series is co-executive produced by Sharon Remmer.
