MGM+ picks up Boat Rocker’s Beacon 23

The sci-fi thriller starring Lena Headey and Stephan James was originally commissioned by Spectrum Originals and AMC Networks.

MGM+ is the new home for Boat Rocker’s sci-fi thriller Beacon 23.

The U.S. linear channel and streaming service, formerly known as Epix, has acquired the series, which was originally commissioned by Spectrum Originals and AMC Networks. It will debut on MGM+ on Nov. 12.

The deal includes two seasons, a spokesperson for Boat Rocker tells Playback Daily.

Beacon 23 is produced by Boat Rocker and stars Lena Headey and Canadian actor Stephan James as two people who become trapped in a beacon that serves as a lighthouse for space travelers. The series is created by Zak Penn (Ready Player One), who serves as an executive producer alongside Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead), Headey and James. Boat Rocker handles global distribution and licensing.

The project was first ordered by Spectrum and AMC in 2020, and received an early season-two order while in production in 2022. However, Spectrum owner Charter Communications later announced that it was closing Spectrum Originals and moving away from scripted originals.

Boat Rocker told Playback Daily at the time that Spectrum and AMC remained a “dedicated partner” on the series.

“Beacon 23 is a rare psychological thriller whose rich characters and gripping storylines take you to some pretty unexpected places,” said David Fortier and Ivan Schneeberg, co-executive chairmen of Boat Rocker Media, co-chairmen of Boat Rocker Studios, and executive producers of the series, in a joint statement “We’re grateful to our creative partners for helping bring this epic story to life.”

Additional EPs on the series are James Middleton, Nick Nantell, Tina Thor, Katie O’Connell Marsh, Elisa Ellis, Liz Varner, Ira Steven Behr, Daniel Percival, and Joy Blake.
