Chateau Laurier, Less than Kosher lead T.O. Webfest nominees

Thirty-six Canadian projects lead nominees for the 10th edition of the digital content festival.

Celebrating 10 years of its annual short form digital content festival, T.O. Webfest has released its 2023 nominees—featuring series from 10 different countries.

Canadian projects make up 36 nominations across 10 genres, plus 25 craft and special categories. In total, 95 official selections were made for the festival.

Webfest is a highlight festival for Canadian producers, with many series that have won there later getting nods at events like the Canadian Screen Awards.

This year’s stand-out Canadian projects include season two of Chateau Laurier (pictured), produced by James Stewart. The historic drama earned nominations in 15 categories, including Best Drama, Best Editing and Best Writing.

Less than Kosher, produced by Laura Nordin and Emily Andrews, follows close behind with 13 nominations, including Best Toronto Series, Best Directing and Best Comedy. The series is described as a “Jewish electro-pop musical.”

Québec’s Top Dogs: Vengeance, produced by Vincent Chabot, earned 11 nominations, including Best French-Canadian Series.

“The talent in Canada is through the roof, and we’re lucky to have so much financial support to produce our content. While it is extremely competitive, many countries aren’t as robust in the type of funding available to producers,” Leah Rifkin, festival director of T.O. Webfest, told Playback Daily.

“The quality of work and the level of competition exemplify the remarkable growth and potential of web series as a viable industry,” she added in a release.

T.O. Webfest is presented by non-profit WebSeries Canada, with additional support from Canada Media Fund, Ontario Creates, CBC Gem, Independent Production Fund, Bell Fund, Shaw Rocket Fund, Telus Fund, and CMPA.

Set to kick off on Sept. 19, the two-day festival takes place at Artscape Daniels Launchpad in Toronto. The winners will be announced at the Awards Gala on Sept. 20.
