Two Canadian-produced projects will lead Cineflix Rights’ MIPTV slate for 2022.
The Cineflix Media-owned distributor will make its in-person return to the Cannes market for the first time since MIPCOM in 2019, with several titles in tow.
Among them is the Canada/Mexico thriller Sugar (1 x 90 minutes), produced by Cineflix-backed Montreal prodco Connect3 and B.C.’s Sepia Films. The film is directed by Indian-born Canadian-American filmmaker Vic Sarin and stars Katherine McNamara (Shadowhunters, Arrow). The film is based on the real-life story of two Canadian influencers who pled guilty to smuggling drugs while on a 40-day luxury cruise.
Sugar went into production in 2021 in Montreal and Cancun, Mexico. Producers on the film are Sepia’s Tina Pehme and Kim Roberts, Connect3′s Pablo Salzman, as well as Israel Gonzalez of Cancun’s Kanan Films.
Cineflix Rights will also bring the recently announced slate title Reginald the Vampire (10 x 60 minutes), produced by Thunderbird Entertainment-owned Great Pacific Media, Modern Story, December Films and Cineflix Studios for U.S. network Syfy. The series has already been acquired by Amazon’s Prime Video for Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Other returning Canadian titles on the MIPTV slate are scripted series Happily Married (Productions Casablanca) and Coroner (Back Alley Films, Muse Entertainment and Cineflix Studios), and unscripted series Homicide: Hours to Kill (Cineflix Productions) and Property Brothers: Forever Home (Scott Brothers Entertainment).
“Our MIPTV 22 slate is packed with standout new titles and returning hits from some of the world’s most creative producers, all delivering audience and channel loyalty in a competitive landscape,” said Cineflix Rights CEO Tim Mutimer in a statement. “We’re thrilled to be back in Cannes, and especially to be joined by Jacob Batalon as we launch our latest scripted series Reginald the Vampire. The team’s diaries are packed and we’re looking forward to face-to-face meetings with existing and new partners.”
