Toronto-based distributor levelFILM has acquired the Canadian rights to Seth A. Smith’s sci-fi thriller Tin Can.
Filmed in Nova Scotia in spring 2019, the feature recently had its world premiere at the genre-focused Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal.
Tin Can is the third film from Smith, who served as director and co-writer. The thriller is produced by Nancy Ulrich, who negotiated the acquisition with levelFILM EVP Michael Baker, and co-written by Darcy Spidle.
The feature stars Montreal’s Anna Hopkins as a scientist confined to a chamber as she tries to solve a deadly plague in the world outside. It co-stars Halifax’s Simon Mutabazi and veteran Toronto actor Michael Ironside.
Tin Can will have a theatrical release in 2022.
Smith’s previous features are 2017’s The Crescent and 2012’s Lowlife.
Previous acquisitions from levelFILM include short film Black Bodies, scripted features The Assistant and Together Together and documentaries The Dissident and Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street.
Fantasia’s virtual festival continues until Aug. 25.
