Boat Rocker in development on Sag Harbor with HBO Max

The pilot will be penned by playwright Daniel "Koa" Beaty, with Laurence Fishburne attached as executive producer.

Boat Rocker Studios is in development on an adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winning and New York Times bestselling author Colson Whitehead’s Sag Harbor for WarnerMedia streamer HBO Max.

Laurence Fishburne is on board to executive produce the series, which will feature a pilot script written by playwright Daniel “Koa” Beaty (pictured), alongside his partner Helen Sugland (grown-ish, black-ish) under the banner Cinema Gypsy Productions.

Set in 1985, Sag Harbor tells the coming-of-age story of Benji Cooper, one of the few Black students at an elite prep school in Manhattan who escapes to the Hamptons every summer where a small community of African American professionals have built a world of their own.

“It’s a world and family rarely seen on screen, and that’s thrilling during these transformational times,” said Beaty, whose written plays include Through the Night, Emergency, Mr. Joy, and The Tallest Tree in the Forest – Paul Robeson, in a statement.

Beaty and Colson Whitehead will executive produce alongside Katie O’Connell Marsh, vice-chair, Boat Rocker Studios.

Boat Rocker Studios recently earned a greenlight for a second season of Disney Junior series Dino Ranch, which will head to Disney+ in the U.S. and Latin America in 2022.

Boat Rocker Media went public earlier this year on the Toronto Stock Exchange, raising $170.1 million following the closing of its initial public offering.
