Network Entertainment reveals first project with John Varvatos

A new four-part docuseries for EPIX is the initial project in what Network has said is a long-term partnership.

Vancouver-based Network Entertainment has introduced its first TV project with American menswear designer John Varvatos.

Punk, a four-part docuseries for American TV network EPIX, tracks the history behind the subculture. Exec produced by Varvatos, musician James Newell Osterberg Jr. (also known as Iggy Pop) and the prodco’s founder and CEO Derik Murray, the one-hour series is comprised of unseen photographs, archival footage and interviews about the movement that took hold in the mid-1970s. Punk features interviews with Blondie’s Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein; Guns N’ Roses’ Michael Andrew “Duff” McKagan; the Ramones’ Marky Ramone; and Dave Grohl. Jesse James Miller, whose directing credits include Love It or List It Vancouver and Network Entertainment’s I Am Richard Pryor, serves as director.

Network and Varvatos first announced they would partner to create original film and TV content in the music, fashion and pop culture space in March 2018. “The mission of the partnership is to create premium content that will be distributed globally on multiple platforms and will be designed to feature complementary merchandising, publishing, sponsorship, and special event opportunities,” said a release at the time.

Network’s Murray told Playback Daily that the idea for Punk started to come together after the two first met in 2017, connecting over their shared interest in the subculture. “It became clear that with John’s passion and deep connection to the roots of the punk movement, the ultimate punk story could be told,” said Murray. Varvatos is also the author of John Varvatos: Rock in Fashion with Holly George-Warren, a book that tracks rock music’s influence on fashion and pop culture over the years.

Production on Punk started in summer 2018 in Vancouver, New York, San Francisco, L.A., Washington, D.C. and London, U.K. Punk will debut on EPIX in the U.S. on March 11 at 10 p.m. ET.
