Blue Ant Media increases originals slate for Cottage Life, Makeful

The broadcaster has greenlit three new Canadian-produced series, with an additional three renewals and a deluge of digital content.

Blue Ant Media has greenlit three new series to air on Cottage Life and Makeful. The slate includes three new unscripted series in documentary and competition formats, as well as new seasons of three additional shows on Cottage Life and T+E.

This is Blue Ant’s second commissioning announcement in six months, with six new original series unveiled in June 2018. The company has made a strategic effort to boost its Canadian production level, hiring producer Laura Michalchyshyn as an original programming consultant in late 2018, as well as promoting Jamie Schouela as president of Canada media, and a number of additional appointments for North America.

Among the newly announced series is The Bryk Cottage (6 x 30 minutes), a docu-series produced by Blue Ant’s recently acquired Saloon Media. The series, which will air on Cottage Life, follows contractor and designer Danielle Bryk and her team in Georgian Bay, ON as they rebuild her family’s old cottage.

The second greenlit docu-series is Coolest Places to Stay (6 x 30 minutes; working title), produced by Architect Films. Scheduled to air on Makeful in April 2019, it examines the growing trend of using homes as vacation rentals for travellers with host Katie Herbert. Rounding out the new content is Landscape Artist of the Year, a competition series format from the U.K., which has painters compete in landscape art challenges. The series is also set to air on Makeful.

Among the renewed series are two Saloon Media copros, Bondi Vet: Coast to Coast (10 x 60 minutes) and See No Evil (16 x 60 minutes), both set to premiere in spring 2019. Bondi Vet, coproduced with WFTN in Australia, will be revamped in the new season to feature four Australian vets as they treat exotic wildlife and local pets. The series is set to premiere on Cottage Life.

See No Evil, coproduced with the U.K.’s Arrow Media, will continue into a fifth season. The series uses real CCTV footage mixed with dramatic recreations to tell the story of grisly murderers caught on tape, and will air on T+E.

The third renewal is Our House Media’s Paranormal Survivor (10 x 60 minutes), which also enters its fifth season. The series, also set to premiere on T+E in the spring, uses witness testimonials and dramatized recreations to tell the tales of real-life supernatural experiences.

On the digital side, Blue Ant also announced a large slate of DIY-themed content for the Cottage Life website. The lineup includes a 15-episode webseries, produced by Farmhouse Productions, featuring Brojects stars Kevin and Andrew Buckles, along with an additional 30 short-form videos.
