Producer Jonathan Bronfman (pictured) and visual effects veteran Lon Molnar have joined forces to launch a Toronto-based VFX studio.
The new company, Monsters Aliens Robots Zombies (MARZ), focuses on high-end TV projects and is currently working on HBO’s Watchmen and Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy. MARZ also previously completed VFX work on season three of Wynonna Earp, Star Trek Discovery, Donovan Marsh-directed feature Hunter Killer and Amy Shumer’s feature I Feel Pretty.
Molnar and Bronfman have previously worked together on projects including The Witch (2015), Bang Bang Baby and Patti Cake$.
The new entity marks Bronfman’s first formal move into the VFX business. He is also the head of Toronto prodco JoBro Productions, which focuses primarily on feature film. He founded the company in 2012, with the prodco’s total development and production spending hitting around $15 million in 2017. Bronfmans’s recent credits include Jay Baruchel’s Random Acts of Violence (2019) and writer/director Ricky Tollman’s Run This Town (2019), starring Damian Lewis.
Molnar meanwhile spent 15 years as CEO and senior VFX supervisor at Toronto-based VFX company Intelligent Creatures, which handled visual effects on international features such as Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009), Babel (2006) and Mr & Mrs Smith (2005).
