A TV adaptation of David Cronenberg’s 1981 film Scanners (pictured) is in the works with Bron Studios and the recently formed production entity Media Res.
B.C.’s Bron and L.A-based Media Res, which is a TV-focused partnership between HBO’s former EVP of programming Michael Ellenberg and Bron, have acquired the rights to the sci-fi horror about people with telepathic and telekinetic powers.
After spending six years in the film space, Bron in February announced it was branching into television, first hiring Danielle Reardon as its new VP of television development, before formally launching Media Res in June.
In a statement announcing the Scanners remake, Bron said the plan is to attach both a filmmaker and a showrunner to the project before shopping it to potential buyers.
Ellenberg will executive produce alongside Bron CEO Aaron L. Gilbert, Reardon, U.S. film producer Clark Peterson (Monster), Pierre David, who was a producer on the original Scanners, veteran producer Rene Malo (Decline of the American Empire) and Fanny-Laure Malo (Sarah Prefers to Run).
A number of Scanners sequels and spinoffs were released following the first film in 1981, though Bron and Media Res’ adaptation will be based solely on Cronenberg’s original. As well, in 2007, Dimension Films acquired the rights to the film, which was both written and directed by Cronenberg. Dimension’s remake, however, did not come to pass.
Media Res is also currently in development on the previously announced Scenes from a Marriage, based on the 1973 Swedish TV series written and directed by Ingmar Bergman. The Affair co-creator Hagai Levi is attached as showrunner, director and executive producer, with work currently underway on the scripts.
Bron’s recent film credits include Jason Reitman’s Tully and Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation.
