james milward headshotSecret Location has begun work in its Toronto studio on short-form multiplatform scripted series Halcyon for NBCUniversal International Networks’ channel Syfy.

Secret Location will produce 15 episodes in total, with 10 to air on Syfy’s linear and online channels, as well as five VR episodes to be distributed via the Oculus Rift platform. Halcyon content will also be available on other, yet-to-be announced “premium” and mobile platform. The series, directed by Benjamin Arfmann (Random Stop), will move viewers between the linear and non-linear platforms to find out what happens in the next phase of the story.

The futuristic police drama is set in 2058 in a world where virtual reality has become ubiquitous. The story follows detective Julie Dover of the Virtual Reality Crimes Unit as she tries to solve a murder case.

Halcyon is produced with the participation of the Independent Production Fund. No release date has yet been given for the project, but production is already underway in Toronto. NBCUniversal International Networks airs the Syfy channel in 176 territories across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Asia Pacific.

The news of the Syfy deals comes about a month after Secret Location premiered its latest VR project (entitled Project Literacy: The Lives Unseen) at the World Economic Forum in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland.
