Production is underway on Jean of the Joneses, the inaugural feature from writer/director Stella Meghie, who was named one of Playback‘s 2015 Five to Watch.
The comedy will shoot in both Toronto and New York, with Circle Blue Media’s Amos Adetuyi and Floyd Cane producing. Executive producers on Jean of the Joneses are Sean Dwyer and Elizabeth Cullen of U.S.-based prodco Poke Prod.
The filmmakers also revealed Tuesday the cast attached to the project, including Emmy winner Sherri Shepherd (Top 5, 30 Rock), Michelle Hurst (Orange is the New Black), Taylour Paige (Hit the Floor), Francois Arnaud (The Borgias), Gloria Reuben (Mr. Robot), Erica Ash (Survivor’s Remorse) and Mamoudou Athie (The Get Down).
Jean of the Joneses follows the story of 25-year-old Jean (Paige) and her multi-generational Jamaican-American family, and the secrets they discover after an estranged grandfather dies.
Financiers of the low-budget indie film include Telefilm Canada and U.S. production company Tenth Productions, a subsidiary of media co Radio One. Search Engine Films holds the Canadian distribution rights for Jean of the Joneses.
