Viewers Choice Canada (VCC) co-owners Bell and Rogers are shutting down the pay-per-view (PPV) service this fall.
The channel will cease operations on Sept. 30, 2014,
With both companies having PPV services of their own, the VVC channels represented a duplication of services, Rogers and Bell said in an official statement, and as such “feel there is no need to keep the service operating as a standalone entity.”
Bell and Rogers customers will be transitioned to another service provided by either Bell, Rogers or Shaw, the statement said.
Viewer’s Choice Canada launched in 1991 and offered viewers premium access to major sports events, movies and other special-access paid programming, like wrestling.
Prior to Bell’s 2013 acquisition of Astral Media, VCC was majority-owned (50.1%) by Astral Media.
While PPV is still widely available to Canadians these types of services are no longer the draw they once were, with cable customers able to access anytime VOD programming via set-top boxes and services such as Netflix offering programming on-demand online. As well, PPV services on the film side are still tied to appointment viewing – movies start and end at pre-set times – a viewing habit consumers are increasingly moving away from.
