Syfy boards Killjoys as U.S. broadcaster

U.S.-based genre channel Syfy will be the U.S. home for Killjoys, the new sci-fi series from Toronto-based Temple Street Productions.

Produced in association with Bell Media for its Space channel, the 10-episode series was created by Michelle Lovretta (Lost GirlThe Secret Circle) and will start production in Toronto in August.

The project has been in development since 2012 and was developed under Bell Media’s Writer Only Drama Development Program.

Killjoys was greenlit by Space in October 2013.

The commission marks the first time Temple Street has worked with Syfy, John Young, managing director, Temple Street, tells Playback Daily, adding that the company is “delighted to be back in business with Space again.”

Killjoys will be Temple Street’s second series on Space; the first, Orphan Black is currently on air with its second season on the genre channel.

The sci-fi series follows the story of three interplanetary bounty hunters as they chase warrants through the Quad, a far-away system on the verge of a class war.

Lovretta also serves as executive producer and showrunner on the series and is represented by Toronto and L.A.-based agency The Alpern Group. Temple Street’s David Fortier and Ivan Schneeberg are executive producing.
