NFB filmmaker named MIT visiting artist

NFB documentary filmmaker Katerina Cizek will work with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology OpenDocLab to develop the next production in the NFB’s multi-year, multimedia Highrise documentary project.

This is the first collaboration between the interactive media organizations, the NFB said Thursday.

Cizek will begin work with the OpenDocLab this fall, as part of MIT’s Visiting Artists Program. She will work with scholars and apartment residents to ask how new technological forms are reshaping the rsidents’ personal lives in the suburban high-rise community.

“It will be interesting to see how MIT’s research informs Kat’s storytelling and the Highrise project. This residency will give Kat and our researchers the time to explore the potential of new technologies and methodologies to enable participatory and data-driven storytelling. We look forward to a rich exchange,” said OpenDocLab director Sarah Wolozin in a statement.

MIT’s OpenDocLab brings technologists, storytellers and scholars together to advance the documentary arts, and gives visiting artists and emerging media artists the opportunity to explore the potential of new technologies and collaborate with MIT researchers to shape future storytelling practices.

Cizek’s post at MIT is slated to wrap in mid-2014.

The NFB in March also announced a collaboration with The New York Times Opinion Pages on a new multi-platform Op-Doc series as part of the Highrise project.
