Bell Media’s Space and Quebec’s Cité-Amérique are on board the upcoming seven-part mini-series Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, announced Monday at MIPTV by BBC One.
The global team behind the BBC One-commissioned series includes Endemol Worldwide Distribution, BBC America, Screen Yorkshire, and U.K. prodcos Cuba Pictures, Feel Films, Far Moor as well as the Space and Cité Amérique.
The series is an adaptation, written by Peter Harness, of Susanna Clarke’s novel of the same name, and will join BBC America’s Supernatural Saturday programming block, on which Temple Street’s Orphan Black airs as part of the lineup.
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell will be shot in Quebec and the U.K., with production beginning in late summer.
“Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a fantastic novel with a huge cult following and we really believe that the producers and the talented team that they have assembled have created an extraordinary and fantastical world that will really appeal to our buyers, It’s a hugely exciting prospect for Endemol,” said chief executive of Endemol Worldwide Distribution Cathy Payne in a statement.
“This is a major international production with a wonderful story to tell. It was very important to find the right international partners who all saw the huge potential of the world created by Susanna Clarke and with Endemol, BBC America and Space we are delighted that we all share the same vision on this production. It is a major BBC One series and this quality will be reflected in the calibre of cast the mini-series will attract,” said Far Moor’s Justin Thomson-Glover and Patrick Irwin in their own statement.
Toby Haynes (Sherlock, Doctor Who) is directing. Producers are Greg Dummett for Cité-Amérique and Nick Hirschkorn of Feel Films. Exec producers are Cuba Pictures’ Nick Marston, Tally Garner and Dixie Linder, Endemol Worldwide Distribution, Far Moor’s Justin Thomson-Glover and Patrick Irwin, and Matthew Read for the BBC. The series is receiving an investment from Screen Yorkshire’s Yorkshire Content Fund.
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is produced by Cuba Pictures and co-produced by BBC America in association with Space, Feel Film, Far Moor and Screen Yorkshire.
