Anna Gecan launches Global Spark Media agency

Anna Gecan is putting her HGTV expertise back to work.

The veteran TV programmer, best known for overseeing original content production at HGTV Canada and then HGTV U.S. stateside, has launched a new cross-border co-production agency to help Canadian producers get their factual series to suit American and U.K. broadcasters.

Gecan’s creative model will follow the one she developed while serving as vice president of content and scheduling at HGTV Canada, before she headed to the U.S. in 2009 to become vice president of original programming for HGTV U.S.

Once stateside, Gecan, who is based in New York City, oversaw factual TV series by Canadian producers like Holmes on Homes, Holmes Inspection, Selling New York, Selling LA and All American Handyman.

Her other HGTV credits included Property Virgins, a show about first-time home buyers that bowed on HGTV Canada, Income Property, For Rent and The Unsellables, all produced as co-productions.

Now on her own as president of Global Spark Media, Gecan will assist U.K., U.S. and Canadian broadcasters and producers to similarly reach across their borders to fully finance series that can work in all three markets.

The first project out of the agency is a cross-border series from Canadian producer Big Coat Productions for U.S. broadcaster TLC.

Global Spark Media will also look to turn U.S. formats into Canadian or U.K. series, or create new formats co-financed by foreign partners from the start of production.

“Many U.S. and U.K. broadcasters have had great success in acquiring Canadian factual content, but few have adopted our model that allows for creative input and production in their territory at a fraction of the typical episode cost,” Gecan explained.

For their effort, series partners can cut their costs while retaining exclusive rights in their territory.

Global Spark Media will be based in New York City, with an office in Toronto.
