Adam Beach (Flags of our Fathers, Moose TV) is set to play World War Two soldier Tommy Prince in a new feature from Bay Film Studios (Dating Dot Con). The B.C.-based company said Thursday that its movie will be a ‘true account of Canada’s most highly decorated First Nations soldier.’ Prince served in both WWII and the Korean War, serving with the legendary ‘Devil’s Brigade’ unit in Europe. ‘I am so honored to play this First Nation military hero. He provided a positive role model for all First Nation people, including me,’ Beach said in a statement. Both men were born in Manitoba.
• The CRTC says the increasing importance of wireless services could lead to an about-face in its policy. In a forward-looking paper released this week, the commission noted that its ‘hands-off approach to wireless may come under pressure as it becomes a more important platform tool’ — going on to note that integrated companies like Rogers Communications and BCE may become more central to the production of Canadian programming. The CRTC, which has left wireless alone since 1994, will hold hearings later this year on the matter.
• E1 Entertainment has reportedly picked up Jew Suss: Rise and Fall ahead of its play in competition in Berlin. The drama by Oskar Roehler recounts the story of German actor and propagandist Ferdinand Marian.
• Peter Stebbings’ Defendor has taken the top prize at the Victoria Film Festival. The oddball superhero story, starring Woody Harrelson, won best feature at the close of the festival on Sunday, while best Canadian feature went to Vic Sarin’s A Shine of Rainbows. Documentary The Yes Men Fix the World took the audience prize, while best doc went to Lixin Fan’s Last Train Home. Defendor comes out next week via Alliance.
• Bruce Kalish (Power Rangers) has come on board as showrunner of Mudpit, the new comedy from Cookie Jar Entertainment. The live-action/animation mix starts work on 26 episodes in April.
• ACTRA has elected a new national executive. Howard Storey, Brian Gromoff, Shannon Jardine, Heather Allin, Theresa Tova, Tyrone Benskin and Nigel Bennett will serve two-year terms under union president Ferne Downey and VP Tyrone Benskin. Tova and Benskin were acclaimed as national treasurer and national VP, respectively.
• Sardine Productions (My Goldfish Is Evil) in Montreal is developing a new series, known for the time being as Tim, for Teletoon about an ordinary boy living in a cartoon world.
