Sluggish launch for Gravity

Defying Gravity seems to have its work cut out for it, following a less-than-stellar debut on Sunday.

The B.C.-made sci-fi series drew disappointing numbers in the U.S., where its first episode ran in simulcast on ABC to a reported 3.7 million viewers, making it one of the lowest-rated debuts in the U.S. this summer.

The show placed second in its timeslots, behind reruns of The Simpsons and Family Guy on Fox at 9 p.m. and a rerun of CBS’s Without a Trace at 10 p.m., respectively.

Closer to home, where the series’ debut lined up with the August holiday weekend, the numbers were relatively better. Defying Gravity‘s bow on both CTV and its secondary A network netted a combined 783,000 (2+), and reached 2.5 million, according to BBM NMR. Individual ratings for each network are not available, however.

No one at CTV was available for comment on how the numbers measure up against expectations for the series, which will settle into its regular timeslot this Sunday at 10 p.m.
