Obama special set for HBO

Following the lead of its American cousin, HBO Canada has picked up the rights to this Sunday’s pre-inauguration celebrations in Washington, DC. The 90-minute We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration — which is to include appearances by Beyoncé, Sheryl Crow, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder, among others — will air from the Lincoln Memorial at 2:30 p.m. ET, repeating at 7 p.m.

The special will also run on HBO Canada’s HD channel, and on the on-demand versions of The Movie Network and Movie Central.

The special will be limited to HBO Canada subscribers, however, because of certain rights issues, says a spokesperson. In the U.S., HBO is making the special freely available to all with cable and satellite TV, beyond its own subscribers.

Obama’s formal inauguration will follow on Jan. 20.
