Vivafilm has high hopes for Romeo, Huard DVDs

Alliance Atlantis Vivafilm is hoping for a DVD Super Tuesday, with two popular titles hitting store shelves today.

Romeo et Juliette, the Quebec take on the Bard, arrives along with Au nom de la loi (The Name of the Law), the popular TV cop series starring Quebec comedian-cum-actor Patrick Huard. Both titles are being released in conjunction with Pixcom International.

In Au nom, Huard plays a hardened police officer desperate to determine whether a man who has spent 12 years behind bars is in fact guilty of murder. The series originally ran on Radio-Canada to strong ratings, and was produced by André Dupuy.

Romeo et Juliette, produced by Denise Robert and Daniel Louis, took in more than $2 million in theaters.

‘The box office on this film speaks for itself,’ says Gabbie Corrente, manager of press relations at Vivafilm. ‘And the popularity of Patrick Huard in Quebec is unquestioned. We are expecting a great deal of movement on these titles, which obviously has us very excited.’

Romeo et Juliette was handed the kind of advance publicity filmmakers dream of, with a Canadian Idol-style talent search to find the film’s young leads, broadcast last summer to hefty ratings on Quebec TV.
