Nouveau cinema wraps

The 33rd Montreal Festival of Nouveau Cinema, which screened more than 200 titles from 42 countries, wrapped after 10 days on Oct. 24 with the premiere of Memoires affectives (Looking for Alexander) from Quebec director Francis Leclerc.

This year’s award for best feature went to Dias de Santiago from Peruvian director Josue Mendez, and best screenplay to France’s Abdellatif Kechiche for L’Esquive. From Iraq/Iran, Bahman Ghobadi’s Quand les tortues volent (Turtles Can Fly) won the People’s Choice Award, while the New Discovery Award went to Canadian director Chris Landreth’s animated National Film Board short Ryan.

Canadian director Mike Hoolboom’s Public Lighting shares the NFB Documentary Award with Wang Bing’s A l’ouest des rails, Ulricke Koch’s Asshak, Tales from the Sahara, Hubert Sauper’s Darwin’s Nightmare and Simone Bitton’s Mur. Each filmmaker receives $5,000.

The fest is in the running for $1 million in funds from Telefilm Canada and SODEC, money previously earmarked for the Montreal World Film Festival. The funding decision has been delayed.
