Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump biopic has received two nominations for the 2025 Golden Globe Awards.
The Canada/Ireland/Denmark coproduction’s two stars, Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Jeremy Strong (Succession), received nominations for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, respectively.
The Apprentice, written by Gabriel Sherman, is produced by David Bekerman from Toronto’s Scythia Films, Julianne Ford and Ruth Treacy from Ireland’s Tailored Films and Jacob Jarek from Denmark’s Profile Pictures, along with Abbasi and Louis Tisné. The film follows a fictionalized Trump, played by Stan, and his early real estate career as he is mentored by Strong’s Roy Cohn.
Last week, The Apprentice received three nominations from the Independent Spirit Awards, which also saw Stan recognized for his performance.
Gentilly, Que.-born Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two is up for Best Motion Picture – Drama and best original score while the Vancouver-shot Deadpool & Wolverine, directed by Montreal-born Shawn Levy (Free Guy) and starring Vancouver’s Ryan Reynolds, was nominated for the new category of Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
In the TV categories, Hamilton, Ont.-born Martin Short (Saturday Night Live) was nominated for his performance in the Hulu comedy Only Murders in the Building. Vancouver-shot FX series Shogun received four nominations: one for Best Television Series – Drama and three for performances from Anna Sawai (Pachinko), Tadanobu Asano (Thor: Ragnarok) and Hiroyuki Sanada (Westworld).
The Golden Globe winners will be announced on Sunday, Jan. 5, live on CBS. The awards will also be streamed on Paramount+. Comedian and actor Nikki Glaser will host the awards.
