Happy opening for Saddest Music

An unseasonably warm weekend in Montreal may have hurt the box-office take of the highly anticipated Cite-Amerique feature Monica la mitraille, but despite perfect spring weather, the April 30 Alliance Atlantis Vivafilm release grossed $385,419 over its opening weekend.

Produced by Lorraine Richard and Luc Martineau, with first-time feature director Pierre Houle, the film, which tells the true story behind the infamous Montreal bank robber Shotgun Molly, was released at 99 Quebec theaters for a per theater average of $3,893.

Meanwhile, Guy Maddin’s The Saddest Music in the World, released by TVA Films on the same day, posted an impressive per screen average of $6,000. The limited release hit Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Montreal on a total of five screens and grossed $31,000 over its opening weekend.

‘It’s a strong enough opening that we’re confident the film will get to where we hoped it would, which is six or seven markets, ideally peaking at about a dozen prints playing at the same time.’ says John Fulton, executive director and VP of distribution at TVA’s Toronto office.

According to Fulton, TVA will expand its release to Ottawa, Calgary and Edmonton on May 21 and hopes to add some additional Toronto screens as well.

Also released April 30 was Go Further, Ron Mann’s feature doc about eco-friendly living, narrated by Woody Harrelson. Mongrel Media released the film at five theaters in Vancouver and Toronto, bringing in approximately $10,000 over its opening weekend. The release will expand to Ottawa May 21, with additional expansion planned for the near future.
