Buffalo Gal storms Blizzards

Buffalo Gal Pictures, part of the Minds Eye Entertainment group of companies, came away with seven wins at this year’s Blizzard Awards, hosted by the Manitoba Motion Picture Industry March 3 in celebration of the best in Manitoba film and television production.

Society’s Child, coproduced with Toronto-based Sienna Films, earned best drama ($1 million+) and the jury award for outstanding performance – for lead Kyley Strathem. 2030CE, from Buffalo Gal/Minds Eye, won best children’s program and best performance for lead Tatiana Maslany. In the non-dramatic program category, the Buffalo Gal/Journey Films copro The Notorious Mrs. Armstrong, earned Paula Kelly best direction and best script, and best editing for John Gurdebeke.

Ardith Boxall and Jeff Sutton won best performance by a Manitoba actress/actor for their roles in The Nature of Nicholas, a Critical Madness/Full Stop Films Production from producers Jeff Peeler and Len Pendergast. Best performance by a lead actor went to Jonas Chernick for Inertia from Snack Box Films producer Brendon Sawatzky.

Norma Bailey won best director for the CTV MOW Stolen Miracle from Portfolio Entertainment. Guy Maddin’s Dracula: Pages from a Virgin’s Diary, from Vonnie Von Helmolt Productions, added to its already long list of national and international awards, earning best costume design for Paul Daigle, best art direction for Deanne Rohde and Ricardo Alms, as well as best performing arts production.
