Who’s gone where? From where? And when? As the Revolving Doors spin, we put the spotlight on spot-makers on the move.
Toronto production company Bedlam has signed four directors from L.A.-based spot house Scream to exclusive Canadian representation deals. The directors new to the Bedlam fold are Dario Piana, Stefan Wurnitzer, Allen Martinez and Paul Holahan.
‘They are all very visual,’ says Bedlam executive producer Jennie Montford. ‘We felt, even though [our roster is] conceptually quite strong and very comedic, that we were missing that ‘cinematic’ look, so we are really excited. We are already sending reels out and hoping for a positive response.’
The four directors bring a collective wealth of experience to Bedlam’s international roster.
Piana, alone, has shot more than 350 spots around the world, garnering two Cannes Gold Lions.
Wurnitzer, who made the switch to spots from music videos in 1995, has shot work for Noxzema, Target and Taylor Made.
Martinez, whose reel boasts visual and comedic fare, has shot work for Heineken, Coke and Michelob.
Holahan, a Clio award-winning commercial cinematographer, made the jump to directing in 1997, and has since shot for Spalding, Coke and McDonald’s.
LTB re-signs Jones, partners with Kissfilms
L.A.-based director Jeff Jones has returned to Toronto’s LTB Productions for representation in Canada, resuming a professional relationship with executive producer Wayne Fenske nearing the two-decade mark. Jones and Fenske first worked together in 1984 at Dalton Fenske, carrying their partnership over to LTB.
Jones, who leaves Industry Films, has a varied reel of dialogue and storytelling ads, including work for Ford, BC Tel and Canadian Club.
LTB has also signed upstart Toronto director Michael Sinyi, whose reel includes spots for the Molson Black Horse campaign and Air Nova.
Another new development at the shop is a partnership with Barry Bittle and Kissfilms in Montreal. Fenske and LTB are now representing Kissfilms directors Claude Brie, Jean-Marc Vallee and Dalpe in the Toronto and Vancouver markets, while Bittle and Kissfilms are representing the LTB roster in Montreal.
Avion adds two
Torronto commercial shop Avion Films has signed exclusive Canadian representation agreements with London-based spot directors Paul Arden and Charles Hendley of Arden Sutherland Dodd. Avion executive producer Paola Lazzeri says discussions for the agreement began at the Cannes Advertising Festival in June, and she was immediately struck by the directors’ sensibilities, especially relating to comedy.
Both directors won Cannes Gold Lions this year: Arden for a BMW Motorcycles ad, and Hendley for a Special Olympics spot which also received the special jury prize.
Grayson becomes quintet – sort of
Toronto music house Grayson Matthews has added two new staffers to its sonic trio. The first addition to executive producer Elizabeth Taylor and musicians Tom Westin and Dave Sorbara is Nikki Servos, Grayson’s new assistant executive producer. Servos joins the shop from Manta Digital Sound & Picture, where she served as assistant engineer.
Also new to the fold is bass player/songwriter Jason Gleed, who Taylor says had worked with Westin and Sorbara on several projects prior to officially joining the company.
Gleed has collaborated with the Grayson team on recent jobs for Diet Coke, Pedigree, Bell, the Canadian Football League, IKEA Germany, and others. *
