Game Theory Films acquires Eva Thomas’ Nika & Madison

The film from the Aberdeen co-director also added Amanda Brugel, Shawn Doyle, Gail Maurice and Jennifer Podemski to its cast.

Toronto-based distribution company Game Theory Films has acquired the Canadian rights to Eva Thomas’ (Aberdeen) solo feature directorial debut Nika & Madison.

The film, which wrapped production on Dec. 9 in Toronto and the surrounding areas, added Amanda Brugel (The Handmaid’s Tale), Shawn Doyle (Star Trek: Discovery),  Gail Maurice (Aberdeen) and Jennifer Podemski (Don’t Even) to its cast. Ellyn Jade (Little Bird) and Star Slade (Burden of Truth) were announced as the film’s dual leads last month.

The film is slated for a 2025 festival run followed by a theatrical release and a broadcast and streaming debut on APTN, CBC and CBC Gem, according to a news release.

Nika & Madison is produced by Thomas and co-written by her and Michael McGowan. Podemski, Jade, Paula Devonshire (Indian Horse), Kaniehtiio Horn (Seeds), Tyler Levine (All My Puny Sorrows), and Katelyn Cursio (First Person) are executive producers.

Based on Thomas’ short film Redlights, the feature follows two Indigenous women who go on the run after defending themselves when one of them is arrested and sexually assaulted by a police officer.

“Eva Thomas has crafted a story that is as compelling as it is urgent,” said Hilary Hart, Game Theory Films’ co-president in a statement. “We are proud to partner on this vital film and bring it to audiences in Canada.”

Nika & Madison has received support from Telefilm Canada, the Indigenous Screen Office, Ontario Creates, CBC Films, and APTN.
