Tatiana Maslany picked up a special jury prize for her breakout performance in Grown Up Movie Star at the close of the Sundance festival on Saturday.
Maslany plays a precocious teenager in Adriana Magg’s drama — about 14-year-old determined to grow up fast after her mother abandons the family and her father, a disgraced NHL star. The Saskatchewan native is also known for starring in the CBC MOW Booky Makes Her Mark, and the series Instant Star and Heartland.
Maslany received acclaim at the fest from industry publications including Variety (‘naturalistic, often enchanting’). Movie Star opened on Friday in Toronto through Mongrel Media, with plans to expand on Feb. 19.
Also playing in competition at Sundance was Lixin Fan’s documentary Last Train Home.
Canucks also did well at the concurrent Slamdance festival. Quebec filmmaker Alexandre Franchi was honored for his thriller The Wild Hunt, while fellow Montreal director Charles-Olivier Michaud was recognized for the war drama Snow and Ashes.
