On Monday, CraveTV became the latest entrant to the podcast-to-screen space, announcing an original eight-part interview series for its platform based on the Much Studios podcast Mike On Much.
The adaptation, Much Studios Presents: Mike On Much, is currently in production in Toronto, with Bell Media Studios producing the show in association with writer/director/producer Mike Veerman, Arkells singer Max Kerman and YouTuber Shane Cunningham’s Undraft Productions banner.
Similar to the podcast, episodes of the CraveTV series will feature the trio discussing music, pop culture and entertainment; conducting long-form interviews with writers, directors and musicians; and short-form comedic interviews to conclude each episode. Previous Mike On Much guests include The Chi‘s Lena Waithe, singer Camila Cabello, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Vinyl actor Bobby Cannavale and Canadian director Michelle MacLaren (Game of Thrones), among others.
Bell Media Studios’ John Kampilis will exec produce, with Veerman, Kerman and Cunningham serving as coproducers.
Mike on Much was originally born out of Bell Media’s Much Digital Studios project, a YouTube-based initiative that saw Bell Media ink deals with a long list of emerging and established “creators” to be a part of a Much-branded online network. Veerman was one of the original 13 Canadian creators signed to the network.
According to Bell Media’s Justin Stockman, VP, pay and OTT services, the TV adaptation is a “natural evolution” for the podcast and a chance to reach a new audience. The exec noted that the audio version of the show has a loyal following and that the target audience for the TV property is a mix of entertainment aficionados who enjoy the podcast and CraveTV subscribers.
While the podcast’s regular mid-week schedule will continue, details regarding the adaptation’s episode length and rollout on CraveTV have yet to be announced.
While Bell Media’s HBO Canada has previously aired podcast adaptations, including Pod Save America (set to debut on Oct. 12) and 2 Dope Queens, this marks the first original commission from Bell Media for a TV series based on a podcast.
Bell Media joins others in the podcast space like eOne’s podcast network and Corus, which recently inked a sales partnership with The Podcast Exchange (TPX) for its podcasts and its move to hire a manager of content and audience development for the division.
Much Studios Presents: Mike On Much launches on the streamer later this year.
