Discovery Canada has commissioned six-part docudrama Disasters at Sea, with Smithsonian Channel in the U.S. and Seven Network in Australia on board as international broadcast partners.

The series, which is currently in production, is produced by Exploration Production Inc., Discovery Canada’s in-house prodco. Each hour-long episode unpacks a mysterious marine disaster from recent history using archival footage, first-hand accounts and CGI.

Disasters at Sea (working title), is produced by EPI, which is a joint venture between Bell Media and Discovery Communications. It’s produced in association with Discovery, and in conjunction with Smithsonian Channel and Seven Network. The series is produced by Alix MacDonald (Air Emergency). Executive producers are Marianne Kushmaniuk and Kelly McKeown, who is also director of production for EPI. International rights for the series are management by Exploration Distribution Inc., EPI’s distribution arm.

In a release announcing the international orders, Bell Media called the series the “most comprehensive partnership of its kind for an EPI production.”

EPI has found international success in the past with series like Mighty Ships and Mighty Planes, which were licensed to most major markets. Recent EPI-produced science specials, like Landing on a Comet and Death on a Comet, also air globally on Discovery International Networks
