Shomi has unveiled its second U.S. cable network catalog deal in as many weeks as it girds for battle with Netflix Canada.
The latest SVOD rights deal with Starz Digital Media will see shomi keep popular TV series like Da Vinci’s Demons and The White Queen away from the U.S. video streaming giant, which dominates Canadian online video.
Rogers Media, which is to launch shomi in partnership with Shaw Media, last week unveiled a separate SVOD content deal with Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution for the exclusive streaming rights to past seasons of FX and FXX original series like Sons of Anarchy, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The League, The Americans and American Horror Story.
The latest deal with Starz gives shomi the second window rights to added U.S. series like Power, the comedy Survivor’s Remorse, Black Sails and Magic City.
Shomi, which plans a slew of kids and family fare for subscribers, also secured access to animated series from Film Roman, Starz’s cartoon division.
The Starz content deal was unveiled by Mara Winokur, SVP of digital at Starz, and Marni Shulman, head of content and programming at shomi.
The upstart Canadian video portal will debut in November in beta for Rogers and Shaw cable and internet customers and will be available online and on tablets, mobile devices, Xbox 360 and set-top boxes.
