Cineplex will showcase the music of Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour on 54 movie screens across Canada this fall, picking up on its trend of playing non-movie entertainment as the high season of the summer gives way to September.
Cineplex will screen Gilmour’s concert movie Remember That Night – Live at the Royal Albert Hall on Sept. 15, coinciding with the release of a DVD. The 85-minute high-definition presentation will also include a brief, live performance by Gilmour, and end with a live Q&A via satellite from London.
Pat Marshall, VP of communications and investor relations for Cineplex, notes that the Gilmour event is not a new initiative, but an expansion of the select concerts, speaker series and sporting events the company has been screening. Cineplex had great success with its live Met at the Movies opera program early this year.
‘Our primary business is certainly film exhibition, but with the onset of digital technology, it opened up a whole new window of opportunity and content for us,’ Marshall tells Playback Daily, adding ‘we couldn’t do this if we were still in the age of 35mm projection only.’
Gilmour will be joined by special musical guests including David Crosby, Graham Nash and David Bowie for the concert, which will feature songs from his CD On An Island, as well as Pink Floyd classics. Gilmour will also answer select fan questions submitted to his website at www.davidgilmour.com.
Marshall says Cineplex has more concert initiatives in the works, though she offered no further details.
