A cabinet shuffle expected as early as Monday may put Heritage Minister Bev Oda out of one job and into a new one, according to a story in Thursday’s Globe and Mail.
Oda is expected to be rotated out of Heritage and possibly reassigned elsewhere in cabinet.
Contenders for her replacement include Jason Kenney, the junior cabinet minister responsible for multiculturalism, Senator Michael Fortier, and Fortier’s parliamentary secretary, MP James Moore (Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam).
Reviews of Oda’s performance in the film and television industry have been mixed. Critics accused her of being too soft on Shaw Communications and Group Videotron when they suspended their support from the Canadian Television Fund, causing an industry-wide crisis. Yet she was praised in January for announcing a two-year, $200-million federal contribution to CTF.
In June, Oda rankled filmmakers by refusing to fork over additional federal cash after Telefilm Canada turned down several high-profile projects in Quebec.
Vincent Leduc, Montreal-based producer and spokesman for the APFTQ, believes Oda’s portfolio is a challenging one. ‘It’s a tough job, particularly in terms of everything that’s happening at the CRTC these days. There are lots of files in TV and communications these days and I think that we felt a certain amount of support from her under difficult circumstances.’
