Skinwalkers stumbles

Moviegoers shunned the Canadian-made werewolf film Skinwalkers over the weekend, opting instead for Rush Hour 3 and The Bourne Ultimatum.

Skinwalkers, distributed here by Maple Pictures and After Dark Films in the U.S., managed a meager US$565,000 south of the border, where it played on 737 screens, according to Variety. It made $2,076 on two screens in Quebec. No numbers were available for English Canada.

Rush Hour 3 debuted at number one, followed by Bourne, now in its second week. They grossed US$50.2 and $33.7 million, respectively. Skinwalkers did not place on the weekend’s top 10 chart.

The horror picture, about a boy and his mother caught between two groups of conflicting werewolves, was delayed four times prior to its Aug. 10 release because of, among other things, difficulties finding a suitable release date amid the sequel-driven summer season. It was met with poor reviews.

Representatives from Maple Pictures were not available for comment. Skinwalkers was produced in Canada by Don Carmody and Dennis Berardi of FX firm Mr. X.
