Violent wins big at VIFF’s Canadian film awards

Andrew Huculiak’s debut feature Violent on the weekend dominated the Canadian film prize-giving at the Vancouver International Film Festival.

The indie from Vancouver-based Amazing Factory Productions about a young woman, played by Dagny Backer Johnsen, who recalls five people in her life before a catastrophic event picked up the trophies for the Best BC Film and the Best Canadian Film awards.

Violent, by Andrew Huculiak and co-writers Josh Huculiak, Cayne McKenzie and Joseph Schweers debuted in Karlovy Vary and screened at San Sebastian before last week’s Vancouver festival play.

Other Canadian film jury prizes in Vancouver included the inaugural VIFF Impact Award going to Grant Baldwin for Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story, and Geneviève Dulude-Decelles of The Cut being named the most promising Canadian short film director.

And the B.C. emerging filmmaker award went to Ana Valine for Sitting on the Edge of Marlene.

The Vancouver International Film Festival continues to Oct. 10.
