Cronenberg’s ‘Maps’ to get gala treatment at TIFF 2014

David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars will get its North American premiere with a gala at the 2014 edition of Toronto International Film Festival, with the Canada-U.K coproduction Hector and the Search for Happiness also set to see its North American premiere at the festival.

Maps to the Stars picked up a best actress award at Cannes for Julianne Moore’s performance in the film, where she plays a Hollywood star desperate to hang on to her career. Hector and the Search for Happiness, directed by Peter Chelsom, started production in Vancouver this spring with an ensemble cast that includes Christopher Plummer, Rosamond Pike, Stellan Skarsgard and Veronica Ferres.

Canadian director Philippe Falardeau’s The Good Lie (USA) will also get its world premiere at TIFF. His 2011 film Monsieur Lazhar won the best Canadian feature prize at that year’s festival amongst a bevy of other international prizes. Wild, directed by Canadian Jean-Marc Vallee and starring Reese Witherspoon, will have its international premiere at TIFF with a gala presentation.

Other films set to get the gala treatment and world premieres at TIFF include Mike Binder’s Black and White (USA), The New Girlfriend (Une nouvelle amie) from Francois Ozon (France), Oliver Nakache and Eric Toledano’s Samba (France), Shawn Levy’s This is Where I Leave You (USA) and Lone Scherfig’s The Riot Club.

Elsewhere, TIFF will showcase the world premiere of Kahil Gibran’s The Prophet in a special presentation. The film is a coproduction project between a number of countries, including Canada, France, Lebanon, Qatar and the U.S.

Others films that are slated for their world premiere at TIFF in special presentations include Jason Reitman’s Men, Women & Children (USA), Chris Rock’s Top Five (USA), Regis Wargnier’s The Gate (France),  Christian Petzold’s Phoenix (Germany), Susanne Bier’s A Second Chance (En chance til) (Denmark), Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland’s Still Alice (USA) and James Marsh’s Theory of Everything (U.K./USA).

The festival will close with the world premiere of Alan Rickman’s A Little Chaos at Roy Thomson Hall on Sept. 13. The film stars Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenaerts, Stanley Tucci and Rickman. The opening night film was not announced as it is not confirmed.

“We didn’t want to rush it. We’re in the mist of the selection process, and rather than try to hit an artificial deadline, we thought we would just make sure we had the best film possible for opening night,” TIFF artistic director Cameron Bailey said during the press conference held to reveal the lineup.
