Close Encounters greenlit for second season

Close Encounters, a documentary series from Toronto-based Newroad Media, has been greenlit for a second season by Discovery Canada and Science Channel in the U.S.

The series tells the stories of UFO sightings from around the world, and last season aired on Fridays at 10 p.m. on Discovery Canada.

While Discovery Canada would not release specific ratings information, Newroad Media executive producer Ann Marie Redmond said the network told her the Close Encounters fared particularly well with the 18 to 49 demographic, with many viewers recording the show on PVR.

“When the final [ratings] came in, they were almost doubling because of PVR pickups,” Redmond told Playback Daily.

The first season of the show also fared well internationally and was sold into over 200 countries by Passion Distribution. The show focuses on stories from around the world and features interviews with international experts, which Redmond believes helped Close Encounters‘ global appeal.

“It’s selling well I think because we’re not just sticking to North American stories,” Redmond said.

The second season of Close Encounters is currently slated to air on Discovery Canada in the spring or summer of 2015, Redmond said. In addition to Redmond, Marlo Miazga also serves as executive producer on the series.
