Entertainment One is going with the film title that first brought it to the dance when it releases The F Word in Canada on Aug. 1.
The distributor on Friday said it will retain the “playful original title” for Michael Dowse’s romancer, which stars Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan, even if CBS Films renamed the film for its U.S. release this summer to avoid the censors’ pen.
“The U.S. distributor was under certain MPAA restrictions that do not affect us in Canada so we are able to keep The F Word, the title we all loved from the beginning,” Frank Mendicino, SVP of marketing at eOne Films Canada, said in a statement Friday.
CBS Films, which acquired The F Word at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, re-titled the Canadian film as What If ahead of an Aug. 1 release stateside.
Elan Mastai wrote the screenplay for The F Word, and picked up an award at the recentCanadian Screen Awards.
David Gross and Jesse Shapira of No Trace Camping produce with Macdara Kelleher of Fastnet Films and Andre Rouleau of Caramel Films.
