Toronto filmmaker Sarah Galea-Davis walked away with a $10,000 cheque after her film Can You Wave Bye-Bye? was named best Canadian short at the CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival.
The 18-minute Bye-Bye examines a mother’s bout with depression, which leads her to put her daughter up for adoption before she causes harm to the baby.
Meanwhile, the mother-daughter drama Burgeon and Fade won the emerging Canadian filmmaker award for Quebec director Audrey Cummings, who received $5,000.
Other winners include Canadian Jay White’s comedy Boar Attack, for best animated short, while directors Elizabeth Marre and Olivier Pont of France won live-action short for their drama Manon on the Asphalt. Both films are now eligible to be nominated for the 2009 Academy Awards.
Danish film Out of Spajald (Vaek Fra Spajald) from Thomas Glud and Lars Wass received the audience choice award, along with a $5,000 cash prize. The comedy beat out 268 other films at the fest. The awards were handed out at the 14th annual fest’s closing picnic in Toronto on Sunday.
