Production has started on the fifth season of The Listener, CTV announced Tuesday, with the series now filming at Pinewood Studios in Toronto.

“We’re very happy to be in that brand-new studio,”  Christina Jennings, chairman and CEO of Shaftesbury, told Playback, alluding to the new purpose-built studio space for TV and low-budget productions. The Listener is produced for CTV by Shaftesbury in association with Fox International Channels, and distributed by Shine International.

In the latest season of The Listener, crime-solver Toby Logan (played by Craig Olejnik) moves into a new living situation. The series will also feature forensics lab scenes for the first time, with the addition of forensics technician Alex Kendrick (played by Natalie Krill of Rookie Blue).

The addition of the new sets in the fifth season of The Listener made it an ideal time to move into the studio space at Pinewood, Jennings said, noting that the series was previously filmed in Hamilton.

The move to Pinewood shortens the commute for the cast and crew, most of whom are based in Toronto.

“All around, I think we are going to see more productivity just because people aren’t going to be so tired,” Jennings explained.

Thirteen new one-hour episodes will be shot at Pinewood Studios until May 2014, which brings the series total to 65 episodes.

The Listener achieved a series-high audience during its fourth season with 1.4 million viewers, and was ranked as the fourth most-watched Canadian series across all genres for the year.
