Deepa Mehta’s Heaven on Earth has been picked up for U.S. sales representation by L.A. talent agency International Creative Management, while Maximum Films International has signed on for international sales rights except for Canada.
The film, which makes its world premiere at TIFF as a special presentation, features Bollywood starlet Priety Zinta as an Indian bride who struggles in her dream-life to cancel out the abusive reality of her arranged marriage with an Indo-Canadian.
The ICM deal was negotiated by Mehta’s longtime producing partner David Hamilton, under his Noble Nomad shingle, and ICM’s Bic Tran. ICM also represents Mehta as a director. MFI managing director Charlotte Mickie negotiated the international rights deal. Mongrel Media is distributing the film in Canada.
As well, Mickie has signed to rep TIFF gala title One Week, directed by Michael McGowan (Saint Ralph) and starring Joshua Jackson, Liane Baliban and Campbell Scott. The cross-Canada road movie tracks a young man’s denial of and ultimate confrontation with his mortality. Mickie and McGowan negotiated the deal, which covers all rights except Canada, where Mongrel will release.
MFI also added the HBO-backed Sundance drama Sugar, from Half Nelson director Ryan Fleck, to its burgeoning TIFF sales slate. Produced by Maria Full of Grace producer Paul Mezey, the film explores the baseball dreams of a Dominican immigrant in America. Like Maria Full of Grace, the script was translated from English into Spanish. It screens in the Contemporary World Cinema program.
Also onboard are Atom Egoyan’s Cannes competitor Adoration (a TIFF special presentation) and Randall Cole’s Slamdance opener Real Time (which screens in Canada First!). Produced by Julia Rosenberg of Toronto-based January Films, the comedic drama stars Jay Baruchel as a hyperactive compulsive gambler and Randy Quaid as the hit man assigned to take him out.
