Greens pledge to renew CTF

The Green Party says it will lobby to renew the Canadian Television Fund if its future is in jeopardy.

If elected, the eco-party tells Playback Daily it will restore all arts and culture funding cut by the Conservative government and provide sustained funding for the CTF. ‘We believe in culture. It’s important for our national identity. We would work with other parties to renew the CTF,’ says spokeswoman Nathalie Mathieu.

A spokesman for the Liberal Party, Mathieu Filion, reiterated his party’s intention to renew CTF, but wouldn’t make any promises about working with other parties to protect the fund if the Liberals aren’t elected: ‘It will depend on who wins. Obviously if we are in power we will renew it. But it may not be the Liberals who control the agenda.’

The Bloc Québécois also supports the renewal of CTF, but not necessarily in its present form, according to a statement released by a party spokesman. The NDP has publicly called for the renewal of CTF, but did not return calls for further comment in this article.

The CTF is up for renewal in March.
