Frédérick Pelletier’s Diego Star was the big winner on the weekend among Canadian films as the Festival du Nouveau Cinema wrapped in Montreal.

The juried Focus Grand Prize for best feature went to Bruce LaBruce’s Gerontophilia, which earlier screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

But a special jury prize went to Pelletier’s Diego Star, a drama about a mechanic unjustly accused of causing an accident aboard a dilapidated Russian cargo ship.

And Isaka Sawadogo earned the prize for best actor/actress in the Focus Grand section for her lead role in Diego Star.

Elsewhere, the best Canadian short film prize went to Quelqu’un D’Extraordinaire, by Monia Chokri.

On the international film front, the Festival du Nouveau Cinema jury gave Amat Escalante’s Mexican drug war drama Heli, a Cannes award winner, its Louve d”Or.

And Simon Gross and Nana Ekvtimishvili’s In Bloom, a drama about Georgia’s civil war, earned a special jury prize.
