Alberta has beat out Manitoba to become the filming location for FX’s Fargo miniseries, based on the Coen Brother’s 1996 Oscar-winning movie Fargo.

FX weighed both Alberta and Manitoba on location, fund subsidies and crew availability.

In the end, Alberta won out to host cameras rolling on 10 episodes of the spin-off TV series from MGM Television.

Production is set to start this fall, hopefully with snow on the ground in Alberta, ahead of a spring 2014 airdate.

The Coen Brothers film took the name for the film’s title from Fargo, North Dakota, though they shot the picture in Minnesota.

Roma Khanna, president of television group and digital at MGM Studios, which is producing the spin-off series for FX, said it will not be like the movie.

Instead, the TV adaptation will follow a new crime case and new characters.

“It’s not a retelling of the same story, because on so many levels that would be foolish,” Roma Khanna said Tuesday in Cannes, where she is attending MIPCOM.

Novelist/writer Noah Hawley adapted Fargo for TV, and will executive produce with Joel and Ethan Coen and Warren Littlefield.

Billy Bob Thornton and Sherlock‘s Martin Freeman have already been cast for the Fargo mini.
