Entertainment One has sold its Welcome to Sweden sitcom to NBC.
The U.S. network picked up the Greg Poehler-starring comedy that is coproduced by eOne and Sweden’s TV4.
“This show is a first on so many levels,” said Carrie Stein, executive VP of global production for eOne Television, who stickhandled the deal with NBC.
The fish-out-of-water comedy, executive produced by Amy Poehler, was originally commissioned by Sweden’s TV4 as a mostly English-speaking series, and with some Swedish subtitles.
And while the romantic comedy has Greg Poehler making his acting debut alongside Swedish actress Josephine Bornebusch , eOne and TV4 included cameos by Illeana Douglas, Patrick Duffy, Will Ferrell, Aubrey Plaza and Gene Simmons to generate U.S. network interest.
“The reason this comedy has attracted all these people is because its theme is universal — love conquers all, even if it means moving to Sweden,” eOne’s Stein said.
The first 10 episodes of Welcome to Sweden were shot in Sweden, New York and Los Angeles.
The sitcom portrays the younger brother of Amy Poehler’s true life story about a New York accountant, Bruce (Greg Poehler), who falls in love with a Swedish girl, Emma and follows his heart to Sweden.
Created by Greg Poehler, Welcome to Sweden is a coproduction between eOne, TV4, FLX and Syskon.
Executive producers include Amy Poehler and Greg Poehler, Fredrik Arefalk for TV4, eOne’s Carrie Stein and Swedish TV director/creator Felix Herngren for FLX.
eOne has the worldwide rights to Welcome to Sweden.
