Toronto-based prodcos Phenomenal Films and Scythia Films have inked a slew of deals for their indie feature The Husband, following its world premiere at TIFF.

California-based XYZ Films picked up U.S. sales rights to The Husband, while London- and L.A.-based The Little Film Company took international rights, and Toronto-based distributor A71 Entertainment bought the film for a domestic theatrical release.

The Husband, directed by Bruce McDonald, stars Maxwell McCabe-Lokos, Sarah Allen, August Diehl and Stephen McHattie, with a script written by McCabe-Lokos and Kelly Harms.

The film tells the story of a man left to care for his infant son after his wife is imprisoned for having an affair with a minor.

The Husband is produced by Scythia Films’ Daniel Bekerman and Phenomenal Films’ Cher Hawrysh, and received funding support from Telefilm Canada, the Ontario Media Development Corporation and SuperChannel.

Hawrysh and Bekerman earlier spoke to Playback about putting the film together for Playback‘s Fall issue, including evolving the film through various titles, which included The Graduates, Mannish Boy and Baby, How’d We Ever Get This Way.

Bekerman, along with filmmaker Daniel Cockburn also won the $15,000 Pitch This! prize at this year’s TIFF for The Engineers, which is being developed through CFC Features.
