The first of the Canadian primetime series sold to a U.S. network in the last year has tanked.
CTV’s 4Real bowed on Sept. 21 on The CW as part of its Sunday night lineup, via a distribution deal between Media Rights Capital and Vancouver’s Direct Current Media, producers of the series.
Now CW has pulled the plug on 4Real and three other shows that MRC programmed for CW on Sunday nights via a time-buy agreement: Valentine, Easy Money from The Sopranos‘ showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, and In Harm’s Way.
Two of those series air on Citytv stations on Sunday nights, Easy Money at 8 p.m. and Valentine at 9 p.m.
City programmers indicate Valentine and Easy Money will fade to black on Nov. 30. Through December, the City stations will air Christmas-themed comedies in the Sunday night slots, and then go to movie reruns: Ghost World on Dec. 28 and Die Another Day on Jan. 4.
The strategy is to air repeats until the end of the year, when owner Rogers Media will introduce mid-season replacements for Sunday nights.
Both Valentine and Easy Money came to City via a package deal between Rogers and MRC that saw the Canadian network pick up the midseason series F.A.T. City and Surviving the Filthy Rich.
Rogers also acquired the youth-skewing animated series The Life and Times of Tim and The Goode Family, and the comedy series Rita Rocks, Krod Mandoon and Outnumbered.
CW cited dismal ratings for MRC’s Sunday night lineup as grounds to cancel the four series.
4Real, an eight-part documentary series in which celebrities call attention to international social issues, originally aired on CTV and MTV in Canada.
There’s no word on whether a second season of 4Real is planned.
4Real was the fourth CTV series to be acquired in 2008 by a U.S. broadcaster, after CBS acquired Flashpoint, The Listener went to NBC and the music-themed talk show Spectacle: Elvis Costello with… , co-developed by the Canadian network, was picked up by the Sundance Channel and Channel Four in Britain.
