A controversial Dutch reality beat out Canada’s only contender at the International Emmys in New York on Monday, as the CBC special Canada’s Next Great Prime Minister went home empty-handed following a nomination in the non-scripted entertainment category.
The winner — the Netherlands’ The Big Donor Show — has garnered attention worldwide for its contentious premise in which viewers vote which of three candidates should receive a kidney from a terminally ill woman. The woman was not really dying and the show was designed to highlight problems with organ donation laws.
Also nominated in the category were Japan’s Doors and Argentina’s Caiga Quien Caiga.
Next PM has aired in several installments on CBC, in which four young aspiring politicians are grilled by a panel of former PMs, including Paul Martin and John Turner. The U.K. dominated the Emmys with seven wins out of its eight nominations.
